JOHN SACKEY QUARCOOPOME
Born and raised in the Atukpai house, situated between the Accra central Post Office and the Salaga Market, Grandfather Sackey instilled in us the values of hard work, discipline, and unity. To this day, our family gathers at the Atukpai house, cherishing the traditions he passed down and honoring the elders who have paved the way before us.
Grandfather Sackey’s entrepreneurial journey was a testament to his vision and determination. He built Labour House in Adabraka, a testament to his hard work, as well as a significant plot of land on Asafoatse Nettey Road in Accra central, known as “Scissors House,” which served as the bustling hub of his thriving tailoring business. Labour House, named in honor of our family’s founder, became a melting pot of diverse professionals, ranging from teachers, printers, and nurses to electricians, pharmacists, market women, and traders.
Beyond his business acumen, Grandfather Sackey was a pillar of strength, fostering peace and unity within our large family. His presence commanded respect, and his unwavering support provided comfort during challenging times. We fondly recall the times when he stepped in to restore harmony, his mere presence instilling a sense of calm and resolution.
As we reflect on Grandfather Sackey’s remarkable life, we find solace in the knowledge that his spirit lives on within each of us. His legacy of hard work, determination, and family values continues to guide us as we navigate our own paths.

Nii Sackey Quarcoopome – A TRIBUTE
John Sackey Quarcoopome, my great-grandfather, was a skilled tailor and grew up in the Atukpai house, which sits between the Accra central Post Office and the Salaga Market. Even now, in 2023, our family still gathers at this house to honor our elders and celebrate the Ga Homowo festival.
As I reflect on his life and legacy, I can say with pride that he was not just a tailor, but a successful entrepreneur who left a lasting impact on our family. He built two properties that became iconic landmarks in Accra: Labour House at Adabraka, and “Scissors House” on Asafoatse Nettey Road. The latter served as the base of our family’s tailoring business, which was aptly nicknamed “Scissors House.”
But beyond his entrepreneurial spirit, my great-grandfather was a man of great character. He was disciplined, hardworking, and a peacemaker in our large family. In Labour House, there were people from all walks of life – teachers, printers, shoemakers, nurses, electricians, pharmacists, market women, and traders. This is a testament to his vision of creating a community of people from diverse backgrounds and professions.
I am grateful to have inherited such a rich legacy from John Sackey Q. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to his family inspire me to work hard and strive for success.
