Emmanuel Odartey-Sackey
QUARCOOPOME
Also known as PapaNii Kakadang, Lante ‘Apa, or ‘Keep Cool’ as we aectionately called him.
He was the eldest son of John Sackey Quarcoopome and elder brother to Mary Odarkor Turkson(Man Naa) and Papa Roger from the same mother.
PapaNii was a tall and imposing gure with a quick temper. He had a presence that commanded both respect and fear. There was order when he appeared on the upper terrace on the west side of Labour House, hence the nickname ‘Keep Cool”
He had a walking stick that we feared because he could use the handle to hook your neck and pull you to him for a slap or reprimand as the case may be. When we ran into trouble with neighbours or strangers, there was nobody you’d rather have on your side because when he appeared and threatens a slap, peace was restored quickly and we were usually spared. He regularly went to Atukpai, Salaga Market Wato area, Atukpai where the main family house is located.
I remember him fondly because he was very generous to me and always felt assured in his presence.
. In his nal days, I was at his bedside as a young doctor to look after him in the house before he passed on peacefully. I also had the honour of being one of his pallbearers.
