Beatrice Akweley
QUARCOOPOME
Also known as Auntie Akweley or Dodoo Nye
DodooNye was the quiet one and was such a gentle soul. I cannot even recall her voice. I never remember her raise her voice in anger.
She was a twin and the youngest sister of Aao Tawiah, Uncle Albert and PapaNpka (GOQ) from the same mother. There were apparently other twin sisters before her who had succumbed to a medical condition that ran in that side of the family.
Dodoonye was not educated. She was a trader at the Adabraka Market. I was surprised to learn that she had seven children. I remember Dodoo, Sister Korkoi, Sister Naadu and Asheley.
I have some fond memories of her son, Dodoo who happened to have some mental health issues and epilepsy; a condition which we did not understand at that time. We lost touch with him when he was admitted to Pantang Hospital.
I remember very well time we spent during our school holidays helping DodooNye pluck and prepare her red peppers before milling for market. It was fun being with her as she never shouted at us or pushed us around. She lived near the Adabraka Post Oce. In her latter years she sold fried sh and banku.
May God continue to bless her kind soul.
